Ukraine claims hundreds of Russians killed by missile attack

On New Year's Day, Ukraine carried out a military strike in the occupied region of Donetsk, claiming to have killed 400 Russian troops.

Russian officials disputed this figure, stating that only 63 troops were killed. Both claims have yet to be verified, as access to the site is currently restricted. The attack took place in the city of Makiivka, where Russian forces were stationed, and resulted in the highest number of deaths acknowledged by Moscow in a single incident since the war began ten months ago. According to a statement from Russia's defence ministry, Ukrainian forces fired six rockets using the US-made Himars system at a building where Russian troops were located. Two of the rockets were reportedly shot down. While a number of Russian commentators and bloggers acknowledged the attack, they claimed that the number of casualties was lower than what Ukraine had reported. In addition to the estimated 400 killed, Ukraine's military stated that 300 were wounded in the strikes. Ukraine also claimed to have destroyed and damaged "up to 10 units of enemy military equipment" in the attack. Ukraine has not confirmed whether or not the strikes were carried out with Himars missiles, as it has a long-standing strategy of not disclosing specific details about its attacks. Hours after the strike in Makiivka, Kyiv came under attack from a drone and missile assault targeting critical infrastructure. One person in Kyiv was injured by debris from a destroyed Russian drone. The weapons used in the attack were Iranian-made Shahed drones, and all 39 of them were eventually shot down by Ukraine. However, energy facilities in Kyiv were damaged, resulting in disruptions to power and heating supplies. Russia has been targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure for several months, damaging power stations and causing millions to lose electricity during the cold winter.

It is rare for Moscow to confirm any casualties on the battlefield, but the scale of the attack in the occupied region of Donetsk on New Year's Day was so significant that it was likely not an option for the Russian government to remain silent. It remains to be seen how the international community will respond to this escalation of violence in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The high number of casualties and the targeting of critical infrastructure in Kyiv will likely garner significant attention and condemnation. It is important for all parties involved to work towards finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict and to avoid actions that escalate tensions further.

It is imperative that efforts be made to de-escalate the situation and prevent further loss of life.
